What is the Program Control workspace?

The Program Control workspace is a new feature in The Grid 2.4.  Program control allows you to create full screen grids that interact with a single program.

A helpful way to think about this is that the Program Control workspace allows you to use any program as a workspace!  When you use the “Run a program” command, the program that you start will be used as your workspace.

This means that any text you type will go into that program!

To get started, try creating a cell that changes to the Program Control workspace, and then make a cell to launch a Windows program.

What can Program Control be used for?

The Program Control workspace can be used to provide access to a specific Windows program, without giving access to all programs or Windows itself.

You can use the sorts of grids that are common in The Grid 2 – keyboards, vocab grids, message grids and so on.

Some ideas for using this feature:

  • Create a grid for accessing a simple (switch activated?) program, such as a game or drawing program.
  • Introduce someone to Word without having to learn about Windows.
  • Provide access to a full email program (rather than The Grid 2’s limited email functionality) whilst retaining the “locked in” feel of The Grid 2.
