Using The Grid 2 with Googlemail

You can use The Grid 2 to access your Googlemail account.

Register for an account

If you do not have a googlemail account, go to http://www.googlemail.com (this will open in a new browser window).

Configure googlemail for POP access

You need to log in to googlemail and configure it for POP3 access.  POP3 is the protocol that most email programs (including The Grid 2) use for email.

  • Log in to your googlemail account on the googlemail website.
  • Click on the Settings link in the top right corner.
  • Click on the Forwarding and POP option at the top of the main window.
  • Mark the box Enable POP for all mail.
  • Click on Save Changes.

Configure the email settings in The Grid 2

You can now enter the settings into The Grid 2.  To access the email settings:

  • Select Edit > User Settings from the menu.
  • Select the Workspaces > Email category.
  • Enter the settings below.

Receiving email:

  • Host: pop.googlemail.com
  • Username: [username]@googlemail.com
  • Password: [the password you selected]
  • Requires SSL authentication: YES (ticked)
  • Port: 995

Sending email:

  • Host: smtp.googlemail.com
  • Username: [username]@googlemail.com
  • Password: [the password you selected]
  • Requires SSL authentication: YES (ticked)
  • Port: 465

Other details:

  • Reply address: [username]@googlemail.com
You must include a reply address.
  • Delete messages from email server when read: YES (ticked)

That's it!  You can test the settings by clicking Test Email Settings, and then click Ok to return to your grids and start sending emails.

The googlemail.com and gmail.com addresses are interchangeable, so should work whichever one you type in.

Troubleshooting

Googlemail is quite picky, so if it doesn't seem to work you need to check your settings carefully.

  • Googlemail requires SSL authentication - make sure these boxes are ticked and that the ports have the correct value.
  • Your username must include @googlemail.com (or @gmail.com) after your username.
  • You must specify your email address as the reply address.
